My First JUGEM

A young aspiring journalist gets the opportunity of a lifetime when he is embedded with a small band of American soldiers during the height of the war in Afghanistan. After a surprise attack, they become separated from their unit and find themselves trapped in an insurgent bunker, surrounded on all sides by the enemy. During their time together, the journalist is able to interview these brave soldiers and uncover who they are, where they come from and their unique personal path they have taken. He finds that in the face of terror, there is still kindness and hope, even in the worst face of humanity. Afghanistan 2006 - A young aspiring journalist gets the opportunity of a lifetime when he is embedded with a small band of American soldiers. Unconvincing and rather tedious. The characters and their reactions to situations were hackneyed, and the acting and script often poor. Quite simply, I could not believe I was watching armed forces in operation.

This is one to avoid. If you want quality drama about embedded journalists on the modern battlefront, watch the HBO mini-series 'Generation Kill'. (Spoiler) Except, during the Patrol, Soldiers are wearing 101st Airborne Division Unit Shoulder Sleeve Patches, then after getting to the "Bunker" they are wearing 10th Mountain Division Shoulder Sleeve Patches.

The 101st Airborne Division was usually up at Northeastern Afghanistan; near "Camp Eagle", Northeastern Afghan border with Pakistan.

Many were wearing both the 10th Mountain Division Shoulder Sleeve Patch and the 101st Airborne Division Shoulder Sleeve Patch as Combat Patches, meaning that they had Served more than once at either Afghanistan or Iraq, and would be a minimum Rank of Specialist Four (4; E-4) or Corporal (E-4) unless they really screwed up and were reduced in Rank.

Lack of Military Equipment, during the beginning of Afghanistan and Iraq till the end, most U.S. Military were wearing lots of U.S. Military Equipment, Interceptor Body Armor, Molle with lots of ammunition. The only exception was U.S. Military Special Operations Forces. Most U.S. Military soldiers started wearing "Camel Backs" (water); Night Vision Goggles (NVGs) were common as the one advantage over the Afghan Taliban and Iraqis Shiite Insurgency, Tactical Individual Radios and Headsets were common also.

Execution of Journalists, the Afghan Taliban NEVER outright executed Journalists and instead demanded Ransom Payments.

Most Afghan Taliban did not wear their head covering like in the Movie and instead wore their Shemaghs to cover their faces due to the high winds and sand (sand mostly at Southern Afghanistan, not the Northern Part of Afghanistan's 2/3rds Mountains (Pamir and Hindu Kush)). Most Veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan as multiple Tours wore Shemagh; kind of like the U.S. Military Soldiers during the Vietnam War wore towels around the neck.

Hunting down the murderer of their families in an anarchic Berlin of the near future, the outlaws Tan and Javid find themselves trapped in the wicked fairytale of a mysterious screenplay that entangles them in a vicious circle of revenge - apparently all written by a clueless dentist. I have waited way too long and have seen way too many miserable German films - but "Snowflake" is my reward, the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow of shite.

Not since "Run, Lola, run" has a film blended action, humor, violence and smart dialog so perfectly. It's also a brilliant meditation on the nature of movie making and determinism/free will.

It's nigh unbelievable that - due to a lack of studio or network support - this was actually filmed over the course of four years (mostly on weekends). It looks absolutely polished, never openly betraying its very limited budget.

Is it flawless? Almost. Sure, the final act could've done with some minor trimming, the title is a bit bland and the sections that were shot in English are a bit more awkward than the rest - but these are minor quibbles.

Watch it in German, if you can - watch it with subtitles, if you must. But watch it. You'll have one hell of a time. I just watched this movie today and was surprised at how goods it relay was. I had been expecting some Hansel and Gretel witch hunters ripoff but was surprised by the movie. I enjoyed the quick witted humor between Javid and Tan and the absurdity of of Eliana search for a assassin but there were a few problems I had with the movie. My main complaint is the origin of Arends abilities is it magical or is it because of some time machine, Either way couldn't Javid and Tan force Arend to write that they went back in time and saved their families from the fire, Also what purpose did snowflake actually serve other than to die did she really have any affect on the story I mean surely would've still saved Jaavid and Tan after all he is a hero. Because of these issues I didn't enjoy the ending as much as I would've liked to but overall it was still a great movie thank you for the enjoyable experience.

After a nuclear war, Phillip Hammer and Marlowe Chandler have spent fifteen years on their own in a bunker, stuffed with junk from the 40s and old detective novels. Now, nineteen-years-old, they leave their shelter to find a world full of mutants, freaks, and cannibals. They become famous detectives in the struggle for the two keys that could fire the last nuclear weapon. The eighties, some of my favorite movies have come from this time and most of them failed to find an audience. Such films as Buckaroo Banzai, Streets of Fire and Radioactive Dreams found new ways to tell classic stories and over the years Streets and Banzai have both developed cult followings but sadly Radioactive Dreams has never been able to find its fan base. It may be because it has never been released on DVD, it could be the terrible music number that grinds the movie to a halt just when the excitement should be building but perhaps it is just too odd.

The story is the standard hard boiled detective yarn with the dick trying to play several sides against each other and discovering the danger of putting their trust in the wrong person. At least it would be standard if not for the Post-Apocalyptic setting and the fact that our heroes have spent almost their entire lives locked up in a bomb shelter and have picked up all they know about the world from reading detective novels. These changes allows the characters to actually grow from kids playing a game to two guys trying not to become cynics in the face of a world were everyone only consider their own best interests and everyone is expendable.

One of the problems with the film for first time viewers is the way that the tone changes from a pretty light hearted beginning to a much darker conclusion. When watching it the second time the shift does not take you off guard and you can just appreciate the film.

If I have made it sound more serious than it is I apologize. It is a fun, very entertaining entry in the Post-Apoc genre and needs a DVD release so it has a chance at building new fans. As a young buck I was an extra in this film in LA. There were so many extras and no real coordination, we didn't know when the camera was rolling and when it wasn't. Shooting seemed to go on forever without a break, so when you got tired you just walked off the set and went home.

We knew when making it that it would go direct to video. It was actually released, and played at my local theater for about two days before it was yanked. I had never before seen a movie taken out of the theater that quickly.

I'm still looking for the video just for nostalgia. I'm glad there are some people out there who can enjoy for something.

Despite of warnings from his Chief, Officer Machete Cortez (Danny Trejo) attempts to rescue a witness against gangster Torrez (Steven Seagal), resulting in the slaying of his family, and his house being burnt down. Three years later, having fully recuperated from his physical injuries, he makes a living as a casual laborer, and is hired to assassinate right-winged Senator John McLaughlin for $150K. His attempt results in the Senator getting injured, and he soon realizes that he has been set-up to ensure a sympathy vote for McLaughlin - who, while ostensibly determined to built an electrified border-fence, has close connections with Torrez; and is also involved with gun-toting vigilante groups that gun down Mexicans with impunity. Machete will also find himself on the run from the Police; pressure will be brought upon the underground 'Network' that assists Mexicans; his brother (Cheech Marin) will be tortured; while ignorant/unknowing Americans get ready to elect McLaughlin. In Mexico, the determined federal agent Machete Cortez opposes to the order of his chief and drives with his partner to the hideout of the drug lord Rogelio Torrez to rescue an abducted witness against the gangster. However, he finds the witness naked on the bed but he is surprisingly betrayed by the woman, and his wife and daughter are murdered by Torrez. Three years later, Machete is an illegal immigrant in Texas that wanders on the streets seeking job in the Day Labor Site. He is hired by Michael Booth to assassinate the boasting right-winged Senator John McLaughlin, who is against the immigrants and defends the construction of an electrified fence along the border with Mexico. Machete receives one hundred and fifty thousand dollars for the assignment, but he gives the money to Luz, a Mexican woman that sells taco in her truck and manages the underground Network that assists illegal Mexicans and helped Machete three years ago. When Machete is ready as a sniper in a tower, he finds that he has been betrayed and set up by Booth, who actually is McLaughlin's adviser and plotted the scheme to improve the statistics with the sympathy of the electors to McLaughlin. Once again Machete survives and discovers that Booth supports the vigilantes led by the cruel Von Jackson and is associated to Torrez. Now Machete seeks revenge against his enemies and becomes a myth. The story of how 'Machete' got produce is a very interesting story & no, it didn't all started with the praise by audience members after seeing the fake trailer that was included in director Robert Rodriguez's and Quentin Tarantino's 2007 co-produce film 'Grindhouse' double-feature. Instead, it all began with director Robert Rodriguez meeting star, Danny Trejo on the set of 1995's 'Desperado'. As you see, it's there, that the director first create the character of Machete, by believing that Danny Trejo could be the next big 'Mexican action star'. It just took, many years for that idea to take hold. Finally in 2010, this mexploitation film was indeed made with the blessing from 20th century Fox. Inspire by John Woo's 1992 film 'Hard Boiled' and his 1989 movie, 'The Killer', the film tells the story of ex-Mexican federal, Isador 'Machete' Cortez (Danny Trejo), being hired to assassinate the anti-illegal immigration politician John McLaughlin (Robert De Niro), only to betrayed by Michael Booth (Jeff Fahey), a local businessman that hired him. Without spoiling the movie, too much, while this movie seems like Danny Trejo's first movie as Machete Cortez; in truth, this was his fifth appearance. The first appearance was in 2001's 'Spy Kids', followed up with its sequels. While, it's nice to see him, back in the role. It's just a bit bizarre to see how his kid-friendly character of the same name has nothing in common with this adult-driven character. They even have different backstory and family connections. Are they twins? Are they clones? Did one of them, stole the other person identify!? Sadly, Rodriquez never truly explain why, he has Danny Trejo played two different characters with the same name. Despite that, I did think Trejo did a great job as the titular character. He was pretty quick at his age, during most of the ridiculous action scenes, even if it's fake looking, heavily choreograph & staged. I can't say the same with the villain of the picture, drug lord, Rogelio Torrez (Steven Seagal). Seagal can barely move, when fighting with Machete. It's clear to me, that he hasn't work out much, since, his last movie 2002's 'Half Past Dead'. He was so old. It was painful to watch. Even his fake Mexican accent was a turn off. He didn't even try. I would rather see, Von Jackson (Don Johnson) or Osiris Amanpour (Tom Savini) as the main villain. Two great performers that seems to misused in their roles. Another performer in this film that irritated me, was Lindsay Lohan as April; Booth's drug-fuel daughter. Not only, was her performance, underwhelming, but her annoying character sure, wasn't needed. Also, it's probably, not the best thing by the casting director, to have Lohan play a drug addict, seeing how she been put on probation. Her acting was dry and emotionless. Unlike her, surprising, most of the rest of female cast was alright. It really surprised me, because normally, I don't think, Jessica Alba and Michelle Rodriquez as good actresses, but somehow, they prove me, wrong as Agent Sartana and Luz. Still, I just glad, Rodriquez cut the slutty identical twin sister, also played by Jessica Alba and Boots McCoy played by Rose McGowan. Three awful actresses would be too much for me, to handle. Nevertheless, if I had to choose one actor that really shine in this film; it would probably be Cheech Marin as Padre Benicio Del Toro. Yes, Marin has only a couple of minutes of screen time, but he manages to steal every scene. He had some of the best one-liners, besides Machete's 'don't text' quote. In the end, the movie had mostly a very impressive cast for an insanely over the top action film. However, they might had overdo it with flying gore, and graphic nudity. Don't get me wrong, I like sex & violence as any other man does, but it comes CGI. I kinda like it, to look kinda real. It was just awkward, that Alba had a shower scene where the crew just etched out, her underwear to make it seem like she was nude. Also, the CGI blood being splattered into the camera direction, got a bit annoying. Another, is the odd choice of sound effects. It doesn't match, what is happening on screen, at times. To be fair, the amateurish nature of virtually everything was deliberate to look, sound, and be funny. Still, there were a few things that they could had cut, because how pointless and unfunny, they were. Those are just examples. Its reasons, like these, is why the 2013's sequel, 'Machete Kills', underperform. Overall: While, 'Machete Kills' was a disappointment. In the end, 'Machete' is still one of the most quintessential exploitation action flick parody of the early '10s. It's hilarious entertaining to a point. A must watch for anybody that love cheesy action films. So picture the scene, Tarantino and Rodriguez are sat around having a few beers and Robert in his drunken state has a brainwave, 'Quentin' he says 'remember that fake trailer I did between 'Death Proof' and 'Planet Terror' Machete?' 'Of course' chirps Quentin 'well I'm going to make it into a full film!' smiles Robert. Instantly QT's eyes light up and he switches his brain to random hoping to chip in some crazy ideas. 'What you got so far?' Robert pours another drink and smiles 'well it's going to have Danny Trejo init of course and I'm thinking loads of guns and over the top action'. 'Maybe you could get a few other names' QT necks a shot 'what about that guy who used to be in Miami Vice? Don Johnson and get Steven Seagal too that would be ace'. More beers flow and Roberts vision becomes more abstract 'you know QT I'm gonna get that guy who used to be in all those films about smoking spliff and Lindsay Lohan!' Laughing QT suggests that it should also have nuns with guns, Robert De Niro and even Roberts's wife, Robert couldn't agree more, it's starting to take shape now he thinks. A few more rounds and a few dozen more clich辿s and the two immature b-movie addled drunkards are ready to put the Machete abortion on to the big screen, oh dear. I can only assume that this is how this movie was formed because if any actual thought went into it then god help us. With such classic moments as Machete refusing to text message 'Machete don't text' he exclaims and then later when feeling an urge to send a text for the first time, and being offered help, declines with the line 'Machete improvise'. Do you remember the film 'Commando' starring Arnie? Well this is basically it with a dash of 'Once upon a Time in Mexico' and then rammed full of bad lines and even worse acting. I have no idea how they got this bank rolled and I'm afraid it's a case of when something was much better as an idea rather than a fully formed waste of everyone's time. This is the kind of movie in which it's considered the zenith of meta-wit to have a slumming Robert De Niro (as Machete's racist politico nemesis) drive a taxi.
